Débutante Nino Machaidze

On January 11, Nino Machaidze will make her Metropolitan Opera debut as Gilda in Verdi's Rigoletto. The soprano, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Angelina Jolie, was a First Prize Winner in the 2007 Leyla Gencer Vocal Competition held in Istanbul. She made her North American debut in 2009 with the Los Angeles Opera. The MET broadcast of January 22 will be live on Sirius XM radio.

Soprano Nino Machaidze made her LA Opera debut as Adina in Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore (September 2009) and will return there as Fiorilla in Rossini's Il Turco in Italia (February/March 2011).

Nino Machaidze is considered one of the most promising artists of today's young generation of singers. Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, in 1983 and a graduate of the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala in Milan, she appeared at La Scala as Marie in Donizetti's La Fille du Regiment in 2007. It was these performances, followed by her debut at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma in the same role, which launched her international career. In summer 2008, she made a sensational debut at the Salzburg Festival as Juliette in the new production of Roméo et Juliette opposite Rolando Villazón.

In the fall of 2008, she debuted at the Teatro Regio in Parma as Gilda in Rigoletto. She subsequently made her debut in Amsterdam in Roméo et Juliette at the Concertgebeouw. She sang her first Elvira in I Puritani at the Teatro Comunale of Bologna in January 2009, opposite Juan Diego Florez, followed by her debut at the Teatro la Fenice as Juliette. In April 2009, she sang her first Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor for her debut at the Théâtre Royale de la Monnaie in Brussels, later repeating the role in Salerno under Daniel Oren. This was followed by her Vienna debut as Fiorilla in Rossini's Il Turco in Italia at the Theater an der Wien in July 2009.

1st Prize at Gencer Competition

In September 2009, Nino Machaidze made her North American debut at LA Opera as Adina in L'Elisir d'Amore. These performances also marked her debut in the role. She also made her debut at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich in a new production of L'Elisir d'Amore in December 2009 and this was followed in January 2010 by her Spanish stage debut at the El Palau de la Reina Sofia in Valencia as Lucia. She then debuted at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona in La Fille du Regiment. In May 2010 she made her debut at the Berlin State Opera as Adina, and in the summer of 2010 returned to Salzburg for a reprise of Roméo et Juliette. She also appeared in gala concerts in Prague, Abu Dhabi and Aarhus.

Earlier during the 2010/11 season, she made her debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in Roméo et Juliette and her debuts at both the Metropolitan Opera and Paris Opera as Gilda in Rigoletto. She also returned to La Scala for L'Elisir d'Amore. Upcoming appearances include Roméo et Juliette at La Scala, and returns to the Liceu in Barcelona in Il Turco in Italia and to Brussels for a revival of Lucia di Lammermoor.

Nino Machaidze began her vocal studies at the age of seven and completed her vocal studies at the conservatory in Tbilisi, and appeared there at the Paliashvili Theater as Gilda, Norina in Don Pasquale and Zerlina in Don Giovanni. First Prize Winner in the Leyla Gencer Vocal Competition in Istanbul, she entered the Accademia of the Scala in 2005 and was soon on stage at the Scala in roles such as Despina in Così fan tutte, Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi under Riccardo Chailly and Musetta in La Boheme. She made her first appearances as Amina in La Sonnambula at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa under Daniel Oren in 2008.

Other roles in her developing repertoire include Amenaide in Tancredi, Giulietta in I Capuleti ed I Montecchi and the title roles in Linda di Chamounix and Lakme.
