"Aida" With Kaufmann And Harteros Gets 8-Month Lead Time Hype

Australian magazine Limelight discusses the most recent recording of Verdi's Aida for Warner Classics, featuring Jonas Kaufmann, Anja Harteros, Ekaterina Semenchuk, and Erwin Schrott under the baton of Antonio Pappano, due in October 2015. Those lucky enough to be in Rome can attend a concert on February 27 of the opera with the cast. Tickets available here. "Over the past two decades the number of studio recordings produced by the world’s biggest record labels of grand operas has dwindled. However a new studio recording of Verdi’s epic masterpiece Aida being produced by Warner Classics and featuring an all star cast proves that the tradition of recording large scale operatic works in the studio is still alive. What’s more, the new recording, due for release in October this year, will boast an authentically Italian provenance with conductor Sir Antonio Pappano at the helm. Pappano, who since 2005 has been Music Director of the Orchestra and Chorus of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, featured on this new recording, is a seasoned hand with Verdi repertoire. This will be the conductor’s second studio recording of a Verdi opera, after his 2002 release of Il Trovatore. His Warner Classics catalogue also contains an award-winning Santa Cecilia version of Verdi’s monumental Requiem. Pappano has assembled an extraordinary cast of similarly experienced Verdi performers, although two notable leads will be making their Aida debuts. Anja Harteros has firmly established her Verdi credentials having appeared in productions of La traviata, Il trovatore, Simon Boccanegra, La forza del destino, Don Carlo and Otello. Starring opposite Harteros will be superstar tenor Jonas Kaufmann, who is no stranger to Verdi’s heroic leads himself, although this too will be the tenor’s Aida debut in the role of the Egyptian warrior Radamès." Fresh off a trip to Barcelona to see her partner Erwin Schrott sing in Gounod's Faust at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, soprano Anna Netrebko sits down after a day of shopping to discuss learning German and her plans for son Tiago when he is ready for school:
Frau Netrebko, ich habe gehört, Sie nehmen fleißig Deutsch-Stunden. Wie geht es Ihnen damit? Ja, ich nehme Unterrichtsstunden. Aber es ist schwer, weil die meisten nur Englisch mit mir sprechen wollen. Trotzdem muss ich es jetzt perfekt lernen, weil mein Sohn Tiago hier bald in den Kindergarten kommt und er dort Deutsch lernt, und ich will mich mit ihm unterhalten können.
Das heißt, Tiago kommt in Wien in den Kindergarten? Ja, ich suche gerade eine passende Einrichtung. Er ist so schnell groß geworde , die Zeit ist wirklich wie im Flug vergangen. Ich erinnere mich noch, wie ich ihn als Baby aus dem Krankenhaus getragen habe und jetzt kommt er schon in den Kindergarten. Ich kann es gar nicht glauben. “'Let’s just say, I think this is my time,' Anna Netrebko suggested after her performance in Anna Bolena at the Metropolitan Opera’s opening gala last night. 'Tomorrow it’s going to be someone else’s.' Netrebko sang in a new staging of Donizetti’s opera about Anne Boleyn, whose beheading started a trend at the court of Henry VIII. Netrebko had taken her seat at the post-performance supper. The meal was spiced lamb and pearl couscous. The decor included giant banners of Holbein paintings, candlelight and bowls filled with flowers, grapes and pears. It was a sumptuous conclusion to Anna’s final mad moments when she swept her long hair away from her neck and ran off to her beheading. Netrebko, seated next to her director, David McVicar, recalled staging the moment. 'We worked together, and we came up with the simplest solution,' McVicar said. 'He is the one who decides,' Netrebko said. 'What I work on, is if I have enough rings on my fingers to really sparkle.' 'She is the true queen of the opera,' Mercedes Bass, chairman of the gala and wife of oil billionaire Sid Bass said, as waiters passed around sherry trifle. 'She controls the stage.' The Basses funded the production, the Met’s first of the opera. The Met plans to produce Donizetti’s two other Tudor operas, even though Netrebko has declined to sing in them." "Summit of the Stars": Netrebko, Schrott and Kaufmann in Munich

They came, they sang, they conquered. The opera trio performed to a crowd of 15,000 who were willing to pay ticket prices up to $500 for tickets. There was beer and champagne, as well as pretzels and steak. The open-air concert managed to avoid the rains as well. Netrebko and Schrott Will Open Restaurant in Vienna

"Operndiva Anna Netrebko und Bassbariton Erwin Schrott wollen ein Restaurant eröffnen – und zwar in Wien, wie sie in einem Interview für die morgen erscheinende NEWS-Ausgabe bekannt geben. Die Stadt bleibt Lebensmittelpunkt, obwohl beide in der nächsten Saison keine Auftritte an der Staatsoper haben. Beide lassen auch hinsichtlich der Salzburger Festspiele, die sie in diesem Sommer nachhaltig mitgestalten, aufhorchen: Anna Netrebko singt dort zwar nächstes Jahr die Mimi in La Bohème, hat aber für die folgenden Jahre der Intendanz Alexander Pereira keine Anfrage. Schrott ist in dieser Ära überhaupt nicht gebucht. „Ja, das tut es" antworten beide einstimmig auf die Frage ob sie das schmerze. Am 6. August treten beide mit dem Tenor Jonas Kaufmann in der Wiener Stadthalle zu einem Galakonzert mit Arien, Duetten und sonstigem auf. Gelegenheit also, für länger Abschied zu nehmen."

NEWS: Stimmt es, dass Sie demnächst ein Restaurant eröffnen werden?
Netrebko: Wir dachten, dass es doch auch noch etwas anderes außerhalb der Oper geben muss. Das Restaurant machen wir aus Leidenschaft. Da geht es nicht ums Geschäft, denn ich weiß, wie schwierig es ist, ein Restaurant professionell zu führen. Aber wir kochen gern und lieben beide gutes Essen in guter Gesellschaft. Wir wollen etwas Neues entwickeln.

NEWS: Wird das Restaurant in Wien sein?
Netrebko: Ja, ich denke schon.
Schrott: Ja. Und dann übernehmen wir die Welt!

NEWS: Was wird auf der Speisekarte stehen? Churrasco oder Borschtsch?
Schrott: Darüber haben wir noch keine Entscheidung getroffen.

Erwin Schrott Admits to GQ He Feels Like a Circus Performer

"Das Auftreten auf internationalen Bühnen genießt Schrott: 'Der Wunsch, herumzukommen im Leben, war in der Tat immer ein Motiv für meine Entscheidungen. Ich träumte als Kind schon davon, in einem Wanderzirkus zu arbeiten. Deswegen wurde mein Traum auch wahr – letztlich bin ich ja nichts anderes als ein vagabundierender Zirkusartist. Ich habe mich nie mit Alternativen beschäftigt', berichtet Schrott. 'Meine Eltern mussten immer schuften – mir dagegen erscheint es so, als wäre das, was ich tue, gar keine Arbeit.'"

After a rocky red carpet with their Mercedes getting into a minor accident, the couple signed autographs and strode into the party taking place in Bratislava. Anna Netrebko Steals the Spotlight From Italian Bombshell

Despite the 78-year old Austrian tycoon Richard Lugner paying Moroccan-born belly dancer Karima El-Mahroug (aka "Ruby The Heart Stealer" and "Bunga-Bunga* Girl") €40,000 to be his date for the Vienna Opera Ball last night, it was the presence of Anna Netrekbo and Erwin Schrott that really rocked the house. Ruby claimed she could belly-dance but not waltz. The operatic duo had no problems taking to the dance floor and showing their moves. Elīna Garanča sang an aria from Samson et Dalila (Saint-Saëns) and "Wien, Wien, nur du allein" (Sieczynski). Also in attendance at the ball were Bob Geldof and Larry Hagman.
