In 1974, Scotto performed for a hostile audience for the first time in her career. Scotto worked with conductors such as Gianandrea Gavazzeni (her self-described personal favorite), Vittorio Gui, Francesco Molinari-Pradelli, Antonino Votto, and Tullio Serafin. She also enjoyed especially close musical partnerships with Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti, Lorin Maazel and James Levine.
